The Art of Walking in Valparaiso - Chile

Valparaiso. That seaside town in Chile coated in street art and colourfully jumbled houses. Valparaiso was our first ‘real’ destination in South America as we considered Santiago just a landing point to the continent, although we found beauty in the city anyway.

An excited pair we made, he and I, to wander the streets, to crane necks at loud and beautiful graffiti, to absorb it all with an ice cream in one hand and a camera in the other.

By day we ate sushi and pesto sandwiches and drank hot chocolates as thick as custard. In the evenings we sat in alleyways, eating mystery flavour empanadas (guessing the flavours helped our Spanish), and watched people and stray dogs going about their business.

Our hostel sat atop a long and rainbow staircase, stacked up the hillside. Pata Pata translates to stairs in Quechuan and it’s easy to see why.
